This site has been created for the students at Jasper Middle School to use for discussion of the Georgia Book Award nominees that are used in the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl.
If you are a JMS student and would like to participate in this wiki, please send me an email at maryperdue@pickenscountyschools.org. I will add you as a member so you can make posts.
Participation is limited to JMS students and faculty who help with Reading Bowl.
Each book on the Reading Bowl list has its own page.
This is where students will share information about the books they are reading for Reading Bowl. As you read the books, post your thoughts on the book. Don't just tell me it was a great book. Tell me what you liked about it or didn't like. While these are all good books, I don't expect everyone to like every book. Tell me honestly what you thought of the book and why. Thoughtful posts go on the discussion section for each book.
Students are expected to write questions on the books. This is where you will post these questions. We will use these questions for practice. I encourage you to write more than ten questions since this is the way you really learn your books. Questions should be posted on the discussion page for each book.
How do you write questions for the books?
Questions should be short answer or fill in the blank. (Similar to AR quiz questions.)
You must include the page number where the answer can be found. If you are reading your books on a Kindle, Nook, or tablet, you must go back to a paper copy to verfiy page numbers. See it as just another review.
Write the question, followed by the answer, then the page number.
Some people like to write questions as they are reading.
Some people like to read the entire book, then go back and reread while writing the questions.
One technique is to write one question for each chapter, then start digging deeper for more questions from each chapter. The more you dig, the better you will know your books.
Questions should make sense when they are read out of context of other questions. During the competition, the questions will be out of order, so you need to write each question so that you do not have to refer to another question for understanding. Ask me if you are confused.
Post your questions to the discussion section of the book you are writing about. (To open the discussion section, click on the icon with the two text balloons.) I recommend you type your questions in a word processing document then cut and paste to the wiki. Sometimes you lose your information right in the middle of typing it and you have to start over. If you don't know how to do this, I'll show you how.
